A DAY WITHOUT FAFH IS A DAY WITH BETTER NUTRITION AgEcon
Binkley, James K..
Two day food intakes from the continuing Survey of Individual Food Intake is used to compare nutrition of individuals who on one day had a FAFH meal and on the other did not. It is found that nutrition on the FAFH day is consistently worse for almost all population subgroups. In particular, significantly more calories are consumed on a day with FAFH meal.

A DECISION MODEL TO ASSESS CATTLE FEEDING PRICE RISK AgEcon
May, Gary J.; Lawrence, John D..
Traditional break-even/fed cattle price projections do not provide adequate risk information to feeders, investors, lenders, and other stakeholders interested in cattle feeding decisions. The objectives of this study were two-fold: 1) develop a spreadsheet model that could estimate the net income distribution surrounding a cattle placement decision based on historical errors of futures based price forecasts, and 2) determine whether information generated from the model can be used to improve placement and marketing decisions. To accomplish objective 1, model was developed that could estimate the income distribution around a pen of cattle under a cash speculating and short hedge pricing strategy. Distribution estimates were based on 7 alternative forecast...

A DECOMPOSITION APPROACH TO ANALYZING RACIAL AND GENDER BIASES AgEcon
Wu, Ya; Escalante, Cesar L.; Gunter, Lewell F.; Epperson, James E..
This study provides a different perspective in revisiting the racial and gender discrimination issue regarding FSA loans. The Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition method, commonly used in wage discrimination analysis, is employed to determine whether there exist unwarranted differences between the loan amounts approved among racial and gender classes. The findings of this study are inconclusive. As with previous studies, no clear and convincing evidence was found to signal racial or gender discrimination with respect to approved loan amounts to farmer borrowers.

A Demand System Analysis of Food for Poor and Non Poor Households. The Case of Argentina AgEcon
Berges, Miriam E.; Casellas, Karina S..
The purpose of this paper is to provide some microeconomics tools to discuss and evaluate public policies that imply transfers of income from the public sector to the poor and their impact on their food demand and calories and nutrient intakes. This study is concerned with the differences in subsistence expenditures, own-price elasticities and income elasticities for two households groups segmented by income: those people below the poverty guideline and those above it. The attention of our research is focused on a demand system for all food groups included in a National Consumption Survey and examines the household food consumption behavior by partitioning the sample. A complete system of demand equations, the Linear Expenditure System (LES), has been used...

A DEMANDA POR ALIMENTOS E O BEM-ESTAR DO CONSUMIDOR CAMPO-GRANDENSE AgEcon
Lucena, Leandro Pessoa; Plens, Marcelo; Neto, Leonardo Francisco Figueiredo; Spadacio, Jackeline Goncalves; Silva, Nathalia Moura Vieira E.

Nascimento, Katiucy Lemes; Nascimento, Carlos Alves; Cardozo, Soraia Aparecida.
A Description of Voluntary Policy Methods for Natural Resource Management AgEcon
Parminter, Terry G..
The voluntary policies being used by local authorities to deliver Resource Management Act outcomes are considered nonstatutory policy methods under the Act, which does not define them or describe how they might be selected and implemented. One economist has been able to list over 50 different economic methods. A similar list has not been available for policy agents interested in drawing upon the rich and extensive experience of people in other disciplines such as agricultural extension and social marketing. Applied literature in a number of social science disciplines has been used in this paper to put such a list together. The author describes possible voluntary policy methods including those associated with adult learning, communication, networking and...

A DESCRIPTIVE AND ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF ANNUAL SALARIES, GENDER, EXPERIENCE, AND PEER-REVIEWED PUBLICATION HISTORIES WITHIN TOP-RANKED AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS PROGRAMS AgEcon
Hilmer, Christiana E.; Hilmer, Michael J..
Utilizing an original data set containing annual salaries and peer-reviewed publication histories for 328 faculty members we examine the labor market for academic agricultural economists. Our descriptive analysis shows that while the profession remains male-dominated, females are making significant inroads at the lower academic ranks, the profession is relatively top-heavy, with nearly two-thirds of the faculty in our data set currently holding the rank of full professor, differences in annual salary exist primarily for faculty at Top 6 programs, and then primarily for full professors. Our regression analysis suggests that controlling for publication history there are neither statistically significant negative returns to increased tenure nor...

A desinformação como obstáculo ao consumo da carne suína in natura AgEcon
Falleiros, Francine Taniguchi; Miguel, Willian Correa; Gameiro, Augusto Hauber.

A Detailed Hydro-Economic Model for Assessing the Effects of Surface Water and Groundwater Policies: A Demonstration Model from Brazil AgEcon
Maneta, Marco P.; Torres, Marcelo; Howitt, Richard E.; Vosti, Stephen A.; Wallender, Wesley W.; Bassoi, Luis H..
Policymakers, managers of water use associations, and many others in developing countries are considering policy actions that will directly or indirectly change the costs and availability of groundwater and surface water for agricultural users. While in many cases such actions may bring about welcomed increases in water use efficiency, little is known about the likely effects of changes in irrigation costs or water access on farmer behavior, or on farmer incomes in the short or long runs, and virtually nothing is known about the detailed immediate or knock-on effects on water resources that such policy actions might cause. This paper reports the preliminary results of research aiming to fill these large scientific gaps by developing a detailed hydrologic...

A Determination of the Trade Creation and Diversion Effects of Regional Trade Agreements in the Western Hemisphere AgEcon
Hilbun, Brian M.; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Dufour, Elizabeth Anne.
With the recent proliferation of Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) the tendency world-wide has been seemingly toward trade liberalization. This thesis is primarily concerned with the impacts RTAs have had in the Western Hemisphere regarding agricultural trade flows. Utilizing the framework of the Gravity Model, agricultural trade flows for 24 Western Hemisphere Nations were examined. In the course of the study it was expected that if RTAs were to have an effect it would be a positive Trade Creation Effect and a negative Trade Diversion Effect with positive effects for GDP of importer/exporter and population size of importer/exporter and a negative effect for that of distance. Of the five agreements examined (NAFTA, AC, MERCO, LAIA, and CACM), NAFTA and...

A Development Visions Approach of Designing Rural Strategies AgEcon
Rusali, Mirela.
The paper aims to present possible development visions for the rural areas in a candidate country to access the EU. The proposed objective is to provide a decision-making tool useful in strategic planning process, by designing models of integrated rural development, applicable at country or regional levels. The scenarios method was used to conceive alternatives for rural development and design scenario matrices, focusing on the institutional and socio-economic modules of analysis. The paper proposes a trend scenario, based on the potentials and constraints identified in the analysis phase, and 3 goal scenarios, based on distinctly different sets of goals or development visions. The expected outcome consists in development of the potential for economic...
